What We Know Regarding the Those Lost of the Bondi Shooting

At least 16 individuals perished and more than 40 were hurt when gunmen fired on a Hanukah event at Bondi Beach, a tragedy local police are describing as a terrorist attack.

In the latest update, authorities have confirmed the death toll remains at 16, which includes one of the suspected gunmen. Moreover, 42 injured people were taken to hospital.

Those who died have not yet been formally identified, but investigators think their ages are between 10 and 87 years of age.

Below are the victims who have been named so far.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.

Described as a father of five children, he worked as the associate rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Family members and acquaintances described him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a family member remarked.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the arrival of their newest son just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, as stated by his wife.

She told the events leading up to the shooting, saying they were standing when the gunfire began. “He shielded me because he wanted to stay near me,” she stated.

The pair were both survivors of the Holocaust, having endured immense hardship in their youth. They had later relocated to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

The French authorities have announced that French man Dan Elkayam is a casualty.

Officially, the Foreign Minister said that France mourned with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This despicable act is a new, tragic manifestation of a disgusting rise of hatred against Jews that we must put a stop to,” the message continued.

One Child

A 10-year-old girl who was rushed to the Sydney Children’s Hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, authorities stated.

One Israeli Citizen

An Israeli citizen was among those killed during the attack, according to multiple sources citing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people taken to hospital, many remain under care, with five in critical condition. The injured comprise two officers who responded to the attack.

A wounded man is a bystander who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the attackers. Described as a local hero, he received bullet wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. Reports indicate he was injured and is receiving treatment in hospital.

In a message, he described the incident as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also praised the actions of those who rushed to help. He stated he believed it was a “miracle” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was also injured in the attack. He told reporters he heard “a large number” of shots.

“Initially, I believed it was rubber bullets, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I’ve been shot myself. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
