Both Deceased Students Identified in Brown University Shooting as Law Enforcement Continue Search for Perpetrator.

Both young individuals who died in the weekend's mass shooting in Providence had tributes paid to them on Monday – as a manhunt for their killer carried on following the release by Rhode Island officials of the single suspect questioned in the case.

Honoring a Lost Student

The student Ella Cook, a sophomore from Alabama, was remembered as “an incredible, grounded, faithful, bright light”, as stated by the Advent Cathedral in Birmingham, which offered condolences for her at a ceremony on Sunday.

She served as the vice-presidency of Brown’s chapter of the College Republicans organization, the group said. Karoline Leavitt also shared sympathies on social media, saying in part: “It's indescribable. Thinking of her loved ones and companions, particularly her mother and father.”

An International Student

The other person killed was MukhammadAziz Umurzokov from Uzbekistan, an Uzbek national in his freshman year at the Ivy League university, according to relatives.

The victim's identification was verified by the foreign office of Uzbekistan.

“He was incredibly kind, funny, and smart. He had big dreams of entering the field of neurosurgery and aiding others,” his sister, Samira Umurzokova said in a online post.

The Shooting Incident

Nine other people were wounded in Saturday’s attack in the engineering department of Brown’s grounds in Providence, during the institution's end-of-term tests.

Law enforcement reported late Sunday that a man aged 24 arrested in a search at a Hampton Inn about 17 miles from the campus earlier in the day was set to be freed.

“A perpetrator remains free,” said Rhode Island’s attorney general, Peter Neronha.

Neronha explained, “Occasionally a probe goes down a path, and then you have to regroup and pursue a different angle, and that is the current situation over the last 24 hours or so.”

Ongoing Concerns

Providence’s mayor, Brett Smiley, acknowledged: “It is expected to provoke renewed concern for our city”.

The assailant began shooting inside a lecture hall in the engineering facility on Saturday, shooting over four dozen bullets from a handgun, a law enforcement official informed the Associated Press.

Law enforcement that searched the inn seized a pair of pistols and two ammunition clips when the suspect was taken into custody, as was reported.

Condition of the Injured

Among those wounded, one pupil was released from the hospital, stated Brown’s president, Christina Paxson. Seven others were in grave but unchanging health, and one was in critical condition, police said on Sunday.

Durham Academy, a private academy in North Carolina, said a recent graduate, Kendall Turner, was among those critically wounded.

More Condolences

Tributes were paid to Cook at a church service in Birmingham on Sunday. A clergyman said, “She shone as a remarkable, stable, devout beacon not only here growing up... but at Brown she was an incredible light in that particular place as well.”

Martin Bertao, Martin Bertao, released remarks from the organization. “Ella was recognized for her courageous, valiant, and compassionate nature as she worked for her branch and peers,” he said.

Jonathan Henick, Jonathan Henick, said he was “extremely sorrowful” by Umurzokov’s death in a tribute. “We extend our sincere condolences to his relatives, friends, and fellow students and lament the passing of his potential.”

Saturday’s killings at Brown, the country's seventh most historic university with about 7,300 undergraduate and three thousand graduate students, occurred during one of at least 392 mass shootings reported in the US so far in this year, according to records.
